Masters of the Universe Classics 2011

Hey He-Fans,

I as chatting a bit with Eric this week about his recent Roast Gooble interviews (which if you haven’t heard episode 47 and 48 they are on iTunes and He-man.org and well worth a listen - as are all episodes BTW!)). He had brought up some great points about early trial and error issues with the line and that got us chatting about all the “conspiracy theories” about the line (like Mattel having something against females due to a lack of POP in the line or a hole in She-Ra's head to hold her mask, etc…)

Thought I’d take a moment to clear up some older issues that are still floating around.

Goddess breakage:

Yes it is 100% true that some Goddess figures have breakage issues with the leg. If your Goddess does break please do return it for another with Mattycollector.com customer service. As for why the leg was breaking, it was due to the sonic wielding when the joints are joined. This same issue happened in DCUC wave 4 and 5 which was produced at the same time. We have (I hope clearly) fixed this issue which is why it does not happen anymore. The issue had nothing do due with the “translucent plastic” as evident by the same issue on DCUC which did not have translucent plastic. I hope this puts this one to rest. ;-)

Stratos not having a weapon:

This is a classic example of early figures reflecting poorly compared to progress with later figures. When the line was started we only planned out three 3-packs. He-Man & Beastman, Stratos & Skeletor and Mer-Man and Man-At-Arms. At that time we were not looking at the number of weapons per figure but were mode about recreating the vintage figure (and vintage Stratos did not come with any weapons). Once the decision was made to split them into single carded monthly figures we were past the point of tooling up more weapons. Clearly the line took off, but you can understand Mattel being cautious at first.

Looking back I honestly do wish we had been able to give him a weapon. I’m sure in time we’ll figure out a way to get him one. But again, much like Teela’s dress being a bit too “hard”, this is an example of an early figure falling victim to trial and error in our attempt to always continue improving the line.

The “hole” in She-Ra’s head:

This is a good example of Mattel and the Horsemen doing what we “thought” was going the extra mile for fans but clearly we misjudged.

We wanted to give fans the ability to display the vintage mask both in the toy position and in the cross sell position. The figure was never intended to be displayed without the mask (just as say, Man-At-Arms was not intended to be without his helmet- granted his helmet is glued on. We left the “glue” off of She-Ra so fans could have the bonus option of displaying the mask in two ways).

And the best way to do this was to use a peg and hole. The clip on was only working for one direction. Doing a mask that could be attached in both directions wasn’t working with a clip. To “make this up” the new She-Ra 2.0 in fall will have a clip on mask that only fits in the vintage toy position. This will let fans have the option of a maskless She-Ra but it will only clip on in one direction. (you will need She-Ra 1.0’s heads to fit on 2.0’s body if you want the cross sell or Style Guide looks!)


The Horsemen designs:

The last thing I wanted to bring up was to reinforce something Eric mentioned on Roast Gooble episode 47. Ninety percent of the time, the Horsemen make the design choices on all of our figures (this included DCUC by the way!). Choice like open hands, closed hands, furry boots etc…) these are artistic design choices the Horsemen make. For every toy line you can’t please everyone all the time. In the end someone needs to make an artistic choice and for the most part we leave this up the Horsemen to do. Usually our direction is limited to asking for additional weapons to fill piece count. And I have to say we couldn't be more proud of their designs! They really do go the extra mile for the fans on all the lines they work on.

We have so much to announce at SDCC I’m just bursting! At this point we are not going to comment yay or nay on any of our MOTU announcements. So asking us to confirm things whether it is rights changes, movie news, playsets or any of the other "guesses" I’ve seen online will only get a universal “wait for SDCC!” reply. We want to have big surprises so the hints are done for now. What I will say is those who come out to Mattyplalooza in person (time TBD pending SDCC) are in for a treat!

Q: In one of the last Q&As it has been mentioned that there is "quite a lot planned with Teela". Can you give us a rough estimate of how many more variants of Teela are in the roadmap to 2017 - from this point of view, that is. And of course we understand it is always subject to change.

TG: Our plans for Teela are not limited to just toys. Stay tuned!
